This Karmann Ghia was used by L Symons to win the 1981 International Total Rally held in South Africa.

It is seen emerging on to dry land after crossing a river in Swaziland during the event. Note the screen to protect the car from animals and bushes hitting the front.

The rally was on a par with the East African Safari Rally for toughness

Ken Green and Dave Lucas on the 1982 WAMC rally. This was the Cardiff airport ’wiggle-woggle’ test, with the main stages over Epynt. The car was a standard 40bhp 1300, with Koni shocks and rear-wheel spacers. It handled very well

This was assumed to be the last World Rally Championship round that the Beetle was homologated for (although it turned out that the Brazilian Beetle was homologated to a later date), but unfortunately the entry retired after the first special stage at Longleat House
